Malaysia attracted RM21.3 billion in foreign investment in 2023, reversing the outflow trend of RM5.5 billion in 2022.

Although investment inflows slowed in December, with net outflows falling to RM1.9 billion from November’s net inflows of RM6.9 billion, foreign investors became net sellers of Malaysian debt securities during the month, selling RM2.1 billion. However, taking into account foreign exchange revaluation changes, Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign exchange reserves increased by US$2.1 billion to US$113.5 billion as of the end of December 2023.

Capital flows may continue to be volatile in the short term, but favorable economic fundamentals and a weaker U.S. dollar may insulate emerging markets, including Malaysia, from large-scale capital outflows, leading to improvements in capital flows in 2024.
