Communications Minister Fahmy Fazil said that Malaysia’s fifth-generation (5G) network coverage in densely populated areas has reached 80.2% as of December 31, exceeding the 80% target.

The government will quickly put forward proposals for a dual 5G network model, and the 5G task force will decide on the roadmap and direction at a meeting on Friday. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications, and was attended by representatives from Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunications companies.

Fahmy said the government will quickly decide to shift to dual 5G network coverage to break monopolies and promote competition. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has previously expressed support for the implementation of 5G networks and welcomed the move to dual network coverage.
