Faced with the threat of Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea, Malaysian manufacturers are urged to source from ASEAN countries and reduce their reliance on external suppliers.

Avoiding the threat of a Red Sea attack could lead to higher prices for manufactured goods in Asia, while manufacturers should optimize multiple modes of transportation, considering the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Partnership, observers said.

Geopolitical unpredictability and supply chain security remain concerns, and working closely with ASEAN counterparts can strengthen manufacturer resilience.

Air transport still offers flexibility for urgent and valuable cargo, but freight forwarders say Asian ports such as China are already experiencing container shortages.
