His Majesty Sultan Abdullah officially launched the large-scale smart rice field project in Pekan, Pahang, to help drive Malaysia towards self-sufficiency in white rice.

His Majesty was present at the launch ceremony, watching the planting process, driving the machinery, and visiting the exhibition. Launched in 2023, the programme aims to increase productivity, increase farmers’ incomes, and increase rice yields through best practices. The program is overseen by IADA and Beigen Mochong, with a total area of 4,134 hectares and 1,716 farmers participating.

Mohd Shabu said he would investigate the possibility of alleged cartels (rice monopolies) in the domestic rice industry and planned to gradually expand the program in the states. He also mentioned that RM1.85 billion was allocated last year to support rice farmers and ensure the continuity of rice production in the country.
