Malaysia Airlines plans to impose a carbon tax on passengers starting in April this year to offset its carbon emissions.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Malaysian Aviation Commission’s consumer protection guidelines need to be revised. The levy will be based on factors such as travel distance and cabin class, but a final timetable has not yet been determined.

The government is also discussing maintaining the 6% sales and services tax (SST) for domestic destinations, while airlines such as Capital A Bhd have expressed support for the plan.

At the same time, AirAsia announced that it will launch special ticket promotions from April 5 to April 17, attracting the attention of a large number of passengers.
