The national oil company has held a steel cutting ceremony for an offshore floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility at Samsung Heavy Industries. The facility will be Malaysia’s first offshore FLNG facility, with a designed annual output of 2 million tons of LNG, and is expected to begin commercial operations in the second half of 2027.

The facility focuses on sustainability and innovation, using energy-efficient power generation systems and aviation-derived gas turbine technology to reduce its carbon footprint. Upon completion, it will be anchored at the Sipitan Oil and Gas Industrial Park in Sabah and is expected to attract new investment.

The Petronas CEO said the facility would provide Malaysia with energy security and position it as a global low-carbon energy hub.
