Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry is considering allowing foreign graduates from local universities to work in Malaysia in order to alleviate the talent shortage in certain industries.

The Minister of Trade and Industry said discussions would be held to allow international students studying at the University of Malaysia to work in the country, particularly in the field of engineering. Pointing out that the electrical and electronics industry needs 50,000 engineers a year, and only 5,000 are trained locally, he called for a solution to this serious problem. In order to attract overseas Malaysians to return to their home countries for work, there is a need to provide appropriate salary levels and opportunities.

The government plans to work with the Ministry of Higher Education and Human Resources to establish a committee to address the talent shortage to ensure an adequate supply of talent in the country.
