Malaysia commits to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Nik Nazmi, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, promised that Malaysia will be committed to reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity by 45% by 2030 compared with 2005, and to implement the vision of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as early as 2050.

Although it accounts for only 0.69% of global greenhouse gas emissions, per capita emissions are higher than the global average. Malaysia is promoting electrification and the deployment of renewable energy through the New Industrial Blueprint and the National Energy Transformation Roadmap. Nik Nazmi said that climate change has had an impact on the domestic economy, biodiversity, water resources and food security. Floods this year caused economic losses of RM622 million. ​

The government is implementing adaptation measures to strengthen climate risk management, water resources management, coastal protection, etc. to adapt to climate change.
