Malaysia’s air passenger numbers to increase by 80.6% in 2023

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government aims to increase the number of air passengers this year by 80.6% to 87.8 million.

Passenger numbers are expected to return to pre-Covid-19 levels next year, with the overall recovery rate between January and September standing at 77.5% compared with the same period in 2019, he said.

He said the number of passengers handled by Malaysian airports in 2019 was 109.4 million, a decrease of 50.1% in 2022 (54.8 million passengers). ​

Anthony Loke said Malaysia Airlines achieved an on-time performance of 79% in the third quarter of 2023, down from 82% in the second quarter. SKS Airlines has the highest on-time rate of domestic flights at 95%, followed by Malaysia Airlines Wings (93%), Bharti Airways (82%), Firefly Airlines (77%), Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia (74%).
