Chairman of the National Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee Lu Siyi said that the Perak state government proposed to establish a regional aviation hub at Ipoh Sultan Azlan Shah Airport suitable for Airbus 320 aircraft to perform long-distance flights of 3 to 5 hours, focusing on ASEAN members direct flights between countries.

The final decision, however, remains with the federal government. He said the committee had discussed the possible establishment of direct flights with industry players.

The transport minister said he welcomed private sector participation in upgrading the country’s less competitive airports through joint ventures through public-private partnerships (PPP), with several private companies already showing interest.
