Communications and Digital Minister Fami revealed that the government will study the implementation of “data embassies”. Data embassies refer to data processing centers set up in our country by companies from specific countries.

Fahmy said concerns about the industry’s views on data sovereignty and Malaysia’s status as an ideal data processing hub were among the reasons behind the study.

He pointed out that the concept of data embassy was proposed by the industry and the government has not yet made a policy decision on it. This requires a comprehensive study that considers legal sovereignty and data security, especially when it involves Malaysians. In addition, this concept needs to be coordinated with the cybersecurity bill being drafted, the amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act and the comprehensive decree that will be submitted to the National Assembly.

He also mentioned that he would discuss matters related to the share subscription agreement between the National Digital Corporation and the mobile network operator with the secretaries-general of the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Finance.
