The Penang Port Commission has approved the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) expansion plan, and the Penang state government will then consider implementing the undersea tunnel project.

This decision was made to ensure safe navigation space for ships in the port area, especially considering the trend of larger ships and the minimum water depth requirements for safe passage.

One of the considerations for the undersea tunnel project is to avoid interference with the expanded port.

In addition, the Silicon Island reclamation project has begun. The first piece of land is expected to be completed in December 2025, and the entire Silicon Island will be completely filled in 2032.
