Johor Minister of State Ong Hafiz revealed that the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ) Memorandum of Understanding is scheduled to be signed with Singapore on January 11, 2024, focusing on promoting economic growth and developing the JSSEZ and financial zones. It is expected to take effect in early 2025.

At the leaders’ retreat last month, the two countries conducted a feasibility study on the JSSEZ ecosystem and are expected to sign a relevant memorandum of understanding early next year. Onhafez called for the immediate implementation of high-speed rail and light rail transit to improve the region’s investment ecosystem.

The high-speed rail project was delayed in 2018 and suspended in 2021 due to no agreement on the amendments. The government is reviewing proposals for high-speed rail projects involving private investment.
