As of September, Penang’s 5G coverage reached 73.4%

Penang’s 5G coverage rate has reached 73.4% as of the end of September 2023, with a total of 469 transmission sites covered by 5G, 316 of which will be completed next year.

State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said local governments, Digital Nasional Bhd and federal and state agencies are cooperating to promote the development of 5G communication networks. He pledged the state government’s commitment to developing investor-friendly communications infrastructure to meet demand and drive Penang towards digitalisation.

As of October, 4G network coverage reached 99.85%, exceeding the national target of 96.96% by the end of the year. Zairil said that in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to improve 4G coverage in various areas across the state, 116 new transmitter structures have been built and 2,044 existing transmitters have been upgraded to 4G. Penang’s mobile broadband penetration rate is 169% and fixed broadband penetration rate is 58.6%.

Grid and power supply improvement projects are also underway, with TNB planning to build six new main intake substations across the state over the next five years.
