The “Corporate Governance (CG) Observation 2023” report shows that Malaysia ranks fifth among 12 markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with a score of 61.5%, an increase of 2% from 2020.

The report, produced by the Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA) in partnership with CLSA, assesses corporate governance and ESG performance in the Asia-Pacific region. The top five markets are Australia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia. Malaysia ranks first in the auditors and audit regulator categories and second in the corporate governance rules category.

However, it performed poorly in government and public governance, ranking eighth. The main problems are inconsistent support for policy and enforcement efforts and attacks on judicial independence.

Malaysia scored 66% in other categories for listed companies, 58% for regulators, 53% for civil society and media, and 42% for investors.
