Google invests $2 billion in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic

Google has pledged to invest $2 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic. An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that the deal is structured as a convertible note that will convert into equity in the startup’s next funding round. Amazon made another massive convertible note investment of up to $4 billion in Anthropic earlier this year.

Google invested $500 million in the latest round of financing and has committed to investing an additional $1.5 billion in the future, people familiar with the matter said. This is in addition to the $550 million Google invested in Anthropic earlier this year. The collaboration, which comes with a major cloud deal that will see Anthropic use Google’s suite of computing services, is larger than the latest investment and will last for multiple years.

The deals create an unusual partnership between Google and rival Amazon, strengthening their positions in artificial intelligence. This also enabled Anthropic to receive a large amount of funding and strengthened its strength in the field of artificial intelligence.
